Early Rectangular Tole Tray with Gold Leaf + Butterfly Motif
Early (likely 18th century) rectangular toleware tray with gold leaf and handpainted detail. Black base featuring gold flora and butterflies, along with light blue and red accents. We believe this dates to the mid 1800’s. The shiny lacquer and gold leaf detail make this a more unusual piece and showcase the influence of Japanese lacquerware, which predates the tole process by centuries.
We believe this is from the estate of Jeanette Webber (d. 2012), a former guild member of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration. A similar piece from the same estate is estimated to be worth $350 (and we believe this estimate was done decades ago). Some patina, yet overall great condition for a piece of this age.
