Large Tole Document Box with Estate Name
Large early (19th century) hinged tin document/strong box with gold border and estate name: Jos. (Joseph) Ducan. We believe the “dec” after the name means “deceased.” This is labeled as box “No. 2.” Before electronic records, or even fire-proof filing cabinets, these fire resistant boxes would have held important documents related to ownership, like as land deeds. They may have been kept in one’s home and were also commonly used by lawyers. Wealthy households may have even had a “muniment room” lined with shelves of these boxes. We love this piece for display and/or storage. Great functional condition with age-commensurate patina and wear, as shown.
